  15.       PRESIDENT NAMES HAYASHI FOR CIVIL RIGHTS POST AT HHS

  17. (Washington, DC)    The President announced today the appointment 
  18. of Asian-American civil rights attorney Dennis Hayashi to be 
  19. Director of the Department of Health and Human Services' Office 
  20. of Civil Rights.  
  21.  
  22.      "Dennis Hayashi has had a distinguished career of both legal 
  23. and public advocacy for equal rights," said the President.  "I am 
  24. counting on him to continue his good work as part of Secretary 
  25. Shalala's team at HHS.  We need to continue to work for fair 
  26. treatment for all Americans."

  28.      Hayashi, who served as part of the Clinton/Gore Transition's 
  29. civil rights cluster, is the National Director of the Japanese 
  30. American Citizens League, the largest and oldest Asian Pacific 
  31. American civil rights organization in the country.  He previously 
  32. worked for more than a decade as an attorney for the Asian Law 
  33. Caucus, Inc., where he oversaw litigation of major impact cases 
  34. and directed legislative advocacy on both the federal and state 
  35. levels.  Hayashi has also been Associate Grievance Director for a 
  36. San Francisco local of the Hotel and Restaurant Employees 
  37. International Union, an instructor a the New College of 
  38. California Law School, and Law Clerk to U.S. District Court Judge 
  39. Robert Takasugi.

  41.      A graduate of Occidental College and the Hastings College of 
  42. the Law, Hayashi has also published articles in the Yale Law 
  43. School Journal of International Law and the Kennedy School of 
  44. Government's Asian American Policy Review, as well as in the 
  45. Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, San Francisco Chronicle, and 
  46. other newspapers.  He lives in Oakland, California.
